9yo Student won 1st Prize on International Children Painting Competition "Mission Rescuer 2008"

Eda Islamay Qomaruddin, an Indonesian student just 9 years old won the 1st prize on general category for 6-9 age group on the International Art Competition for Children’s Painting “Mission Rescuer 2008”, organized by the Bulgarian Ministry for Emergency Situations, Ministry for Science & Education, and the Ministry of Culture. Oase Qomara (10 years old), Eda’s brother also participated in the competition although he did not manage to win a prize for himself.

The awarding ceremony was held on 26 November 2008 in the National Palace of Culture in Sofia. Deputy Prime Minister/Minister for Emergency Situations, H.E. Mrs. Emel Etem presented the prize to Eda who was represented by Shabrina Dara Kusumoandira, daughter of an Indonesian Embassy’s staff. Ambassador Inkiriwang accompanied Shabrina to receive the prize. Eda, unfortunately could not come to Sofia to receive the prize in person.

Ambassador Inkiriwang, during his speech, among others praised the competition for its benefits in boosting children’s awareness and sense of responsibilities in the events of emergency and disaster. Children, Ambassador Inkiriwang said, would be leaders of tomorrow; hence they need to have a sense of responsibility to also prevent disasters caused by global warming, accidents, and acts of terrorism.

Art Competition for Children’s Painting is held annually in Bulgaria by the three sponsoring ministries. This year’s for the first time the competition included children participants from outside Bulgaria. This competition is held under the EUROPA Major Hazard Agreement of the Council of Europe and intended to boost awareness on disasters and the role of rescuers in the events of disaster.

Eda is in 4th year of elementary school in Salatiga, Central Java Province of Indonesia. Eda’s father, Qomarudin in a communication with the Embassy staff via telephone, said that Eda was very happy to hear about the news of the award. Brothers Eda and Oase share similar hobby in painting and are very lucky to have a very supporting parents. According to Qomaruddin they knew about the competition through the internet and sent their paintings via post.
