The 80th Mothers' Day Commemoration at the Embassy

Monday, 22 December 2008

Towards the closing of 2008, the Embassy commemorated the 80th Mothers' Day on 22 December 2009 at the Embassy and was attended by Embassy staff and their families and members of the Indonesian society in Sofia. This commemoration was organized by the Embassy in cooperation with Darma Wanita Persatuan / DWP (organization of the ladies at the Embassy). The commemoration began with an official ceremony officiated by the ladies of the DWP. Mothers Day is observed in Indonesia every 22 December annually to commemorate  the 1st Indonesian Women Congress on 22 December 1928 in the city of Yogyakarta which was held during the national struggle for independence from the Dutch colonial rule. Thus, Mothers' Day in Indonesia is not merely a celebration for women, but also an acknowledgement of Indonesian women's contribution to the founding of the State.

In his speech at the ceremony Ambassador Inkiriwang congratulated the ladies and mentioned the progress achieved in the advancement of women's role in Indonesia in which Indonesian women have managed to hold high public and military posts, even to the posts of president of the republic and generals of the army as well as ambassadors, and acted as an equal partner of men in the national development process. The Ambassador  also thanked the ladies of the DWP for their significant contributions to the Embassy's activities during the year of 2008.

Cultural performance by the children and talent competitions for the gentlemen were held after the official ceremony. Children of the Embassy's home staff read poem for their mothers and performed traditional Indonesian dance, Tari Blantek. The gentlemen participated in a couple of games; 'guessing the recipe for traditional Indonesian cooking' and 'drawing pictures of their spouses. Adding more to the cheerfulness of the event, exchange gifts among the Embassy staff was also held on the occasion of Christmas.
