With Libyan leader Muammar Qaddafi on the edge, the Indonesian government hopes that it will be a new era for the people of Libya to determine their own destiny democratically.

“The developments in Libya have now reached an important and determining phase,” the Foreign Ministry said in a press statement issued on Tuesday.

“The Indonesian government hopes that the latest developments in Libya will see the end of violence against civilians and the start of a political process that will enable all the components of Libyan society to determine their own future democratically.” The statement said the government also expects that all civilians in Libya will be fully protected and not fall victim to violence from any party.

The international community, especially the United Nations, is expected to actively participate in creating conditions conducive to the protection of civilians in Libya and for the political process to roll out.

The government also advises the 19 Indonesian nationals who are still in Libya to remain alert and stay away from conflict areas and from ongoing internal conflicts there.

Foreign Ministry spokesman Michael Tene said it was the Indonesian Embassy in Tunis that was now monitoring the whereabouts and safety of the 19 Indonesian nationals in Libya because the one in Tripoli had temporarily stopped operations since March, when the majority of Indonesian citizens in Tripoli, including embassy staff, were evacuated.
