UI student wins int’l debate competition

A University of Indonesia (UI) student achieved third place in the 2011 World Universities Debating Championship (WUDC) that took place between Dec. 27, 2010 and Jan. 4, 2011 in Botswana.

UI sent two teams to participate in the international debating competition. Team A consisted of Dyah Ayunico Ramadhani (International Relations student, 2007 class) and Riza Aryani (International Relations student, class 2008), while Team B consisted of Carolina Rainintha Damiana Siahaan (International Relations student, class 2007) and Dimas Hokka Soebekti (Environmental Engineering student, class 2008)

Team A advanced to the quarterfinals of English as a Second Language, while Team B reached the semifinals of English as a Foreign Language. Although both teams failed to advance further in the competition, Riza Aryani, one of the UI students, won third place in the Best English Speaker as a Foreign Language category.

Some of the world’s best universities, such as Harvard, Duke, Cornell and Stanford participate in WUDC. The competition involves thousands of students across the globe and has is highly recognized as an event that helps develop critical and logical thinking at university level.
