DARMASISWA RI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAMME
ACADEMIC YEAR 2011/2012


DARMASISWA is a non-degree scholarship program offered to all foreign students from countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia to study Indonesian language (Bahasa Indonesia), arts, music and crafts. Participants can choose one of 44 different universities located in different cities in Indonesia (see places of study). This program is organized by the Department of National Education in cooperation with the Department of Foreign Affairs.

The DARMASISWA program was started in 1974 as part of ASEAN (Association of South East Asian Nations) initiative, admitting only students from ASEAN. However, in 1976 this program was extended to include students from other countries such as Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Hungary, Japan, Mexico, the Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Sweden, and USA. In early 90’s, this program was extended further to include all countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia. Until to date, the number of countries participating in this program is more than 75 countries.

The main purpose of the DARMASISWA program is to promote and increase the interest in the language and culture of Indonesia among the youth of other countries. It has also been designed to provide stronger cultural links and understanding among participating countries.

Darmasiswa RI Scholarship Program is conducted in 2 schemes, i.e :

1.  Regular Program

Regular programme is a one-year scholarship programme offered to foreign students from countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia to study Indonesian language, traditional music, traditional dance, and Indonesian craft in selected Indonesian higher education institutions.

2.  Short course  Program

Regular programme is a six-months scholarship programme offered to foreign students from countries which have diplomatic relationship with Indonesia to study Indonesian language in selected Indonesian higher education institutions.

RIGHTS AND DUTIES:
  1. Exemption from tuition fee.
  2. Monthly allowance on living cost of Rp 1.500.000,00 (one milion rupiah) per month (subject to change)
  3. Clothing allowance; a once a year payment of Rp 300.000,00 (three hundred thousands rupiah) (subject to change)
  4. Willing to teach English or other international language.
  5. Inform the Bureau for Planning and International Cooperation of the Department of National Education.  regarding date and time of arrivals in Indonesia for pick up arrangement.
  6. Signing a statement of declaration provided by the Embassy before leaving to Indonesia.
  7. Signing a contract letter provided by the Department of National Education.

The participant is advised to bring enough money (preferably in US Dollar) for an unexpected additional expenses in Indonesia.

SCHEDULE:

  1. Bundle of application shall be submitted before the end of February 2011.
  2. Selection shall be conducted on the middle of March 2011
  3. Announcement shall be made on the beginning of April 2011
  4. Confirmation to participate from the accepted applicants should be submitted before the beginning of June 2011
  5. Arrival of participants and orientation programme shall be on the beginning of August 2011
  6. Classes shall be conducted from September 2009. For University of Indonesia, class shall be conducted from August 2011

VISA:

Participants shall be given social visit visa by the Embassy. Upon arrival in Indonesia, participants shall submit their passports to Bureau for Planning and International Cooperation of the Department of National Education for necessary arrangements in obtaining temporary stay permit.

ACCOMMODATION:

The Department of National Education does not provide accommodation for participants, therefore participants shall find and finance their own accommodation with the assistance of the higher education institution in which they study.

PROCEDURES:

Application could be made online via http://www.darmasiswa.diknas.go.id or filling the application at the Embassy (also availabe for download in pdf format). In case the application is made online, participants ought to notify the Embassy and send a copy of his application to the Embassy.

Requirements:

  1. Applicants maximum age: 35 years old
  2. Application form.
  3. Copy of academic transcript (translated to English).
  4. Medical certificate confirming the health of participants (translated to English).
  5. Passport size color photograph ( 5 pieces)
  6. Full copy of passport valid for at least 18 months from the time of arrival in Indonesia
  7. Ability to communicate in English

AIRFARE & HEALTH INSURANCE:

The Government of Indonesia does not provide airfare and therefore shall be borne by participants.

HEALTH INSURANCE:

The participants are expected to have an international health insurance since it is not provided by the organizing committee.
